Our Mission

Our mission is to develop a holistic paradigm, one that integrates cultures and peoples by promoting cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.

East-West Study Program

This program offers studies in several major religious and philosophical systems including Judaism, Hinduism, Sufism, and Buddhism. Our focus in this part of our program is to establish an interfaith community, to help each member of our community to discover the deeper streams of their own faith, and to build bridges with the other world faiths in our mutual commitment to making a better world.

The Environmental Program

The mission of our environmental program is to educate, to advocate, and to participate. Education about the issues is a critical first step toward taking action. What is the form of environmental education? Certainly the presentation of lectures and written materials are viable formats. However, the full force, the deeper impact of our environmental disconnectedness comes about when we physically connect to the situations themselves, that is, our physical experience of a forest that has been decimated, the physical experience of connecting to the victims of exposure to toxic environmental chemicals, the cry of whales illegally hunted toward extinction or the factory-farmed animals that have been mechanized into automatons.

Reforesting our parks and neighborhoods under the guidance of the Parks department, joining with other groups in creating a walking and hiking program for introducing our community to the history and the resources of our city, our state, our country, and our world - this kind of education is tangible; it is this type of experience that moves us from a blatant insensitivity to involvement as concerned citizens and environmental activists.

The Wellness Center

The Wellness Center is dedicated to improving the health of individuals and the community. Although our program is for everyone in our community, we offer access to alternative health modalities on a sliding scale with a special focus toward providing these services to low-income populations and to those who do not have insurance plans. The Genesis Health Center is an affiliation of health professionals committed to the ideals of helping individuals, families, and our society establish, maintain, and optimize healthy functioning.

Our programs include community education offered as a series of weekly free lectures open to all, as well as hands-on healing modalities including nutritional counseling for all life stages, bio-syntonic therapy, cranio-sacral therapy, polarity therapy, Reiki healing in individual sessions or as part of a Reiki healing circle, Kabbalistic healing, yoga therapy, Chi Gung therapy, and various other traditional, alternative and energy—work based practices.

The Tree of Life Fitness Studio

Our yoga center is in the Kriya yoga tradition of Babaji and our direct master is Swami Rama of the Himalayas. Our executive director, Dr. David Alkalay, is a direct disciple of Swami Rama.

Our extensive yoga program includes classes and workshops in various yogic traditions including Yoga science, pranayama, meditation, Ashtanga yoga, Kundalini and Tantra yoga.

Other classes and workshops are offered in Ethnic dance, Tai Chi/Chi Gung, and Pilates. Our program is comprehensive through the life stages. We have programs for children, pre- and post-natal yoga and fitness, seniors, rehabilitative yoga, and general fitness for reclaiming or optimizing health.

Publications

Our aim is to publish Queens-based new authors and artists, and to provide a forum for them to present their works in public readings. Included under the term artists are the fine arts and the performing arts. It is also the aim of Genesis Publications to record and videotape readings and performances for public broadcast and for establishing an archive of the spiritual and ethnic music of diverse cultures and peoples. Each Saturday and Sunday evening we present gifted writers and artists in a performance venue, and throughout the year we have fine arts exhibits.
